Are your students reading daily?

The secret to acquiring any skill in life is practice: the more you get, the better you become. The human brain is not ‘hard-wired’ to read, it takes a lot of effort but, with regular practice, it is a skill that unlocks a world of potential.

The introduction of at least 10 minutes' daily reading practice is a great start.

Over time, this ‘little and often’ approach provides both essential practice and helps improve students' vocabulary, comprehension and other literacy skills.

For maximum effect you must understand each the level at which each student is starting.

Understanding a student's actual reading age and level allows you to guide them to appropriate texts.

Research suggests the optimal daily reading time for maximum reading age growth is 35 minutes.

However, growth will only be achieved if students are reading and comprehending texts appropriate for their individual level or zone of proximal development (ZPD).
